Nestled into a grove of heritage trees in Eugene’s south hills, this classic mid-century abode was brought into contemporary times through extensive envelope upgrades, a new material palette and finishes, and an open floor plan concept in the great room while still honoring and celebrating its iconic mid-century features.

To open up the layout of the great room and connect the entry, living, dining and kitchen areas, a single steel pipe column was placed in the center of the space to support the new exposed wood ridge beam above, which was a nod to the original roof that had to be replaced due to structural and thermal shortcomings. The central stone fireplace and hearth provides a warm, enticing gathering perch for both humans and the resident frenchies!

Energy upgrades include: continuous polyiso foam insulation on all exterior walls, higher performing double glazed fiberglass windows, a more efficient furnace, and all new LED lighting and HVAC equipment. Expansive glazing on all facades of the great room frame stunning views of the Willamette Valley floor below and of the surrounding lush foliage, including a greenhouse brimming with exotic cacti and a series of olive trees (a nod to their family roots).

Along with the energy and aesthetic improvements, a complex seismic upgrade via foundation reinforcement was undertaken, achieved with a series of helical piers tied back to the existing foundation with rods, constructed by Ram Jack.
